Charles Leadbeater on education in the slums
In yet another fascinating TED talk, Charles Leadbeater tells the story of how he went looking for radical new forms of education, finding them in the slums of Rio and Kibera, where some of the world’s poorest kids live.
By looking at the different solutions from social entrepreneurs on how to bring education to people all around the world, it is evident that most of these solutions don’t look at all like school, says Leadbeater. Instead, people are finding transformative new ways to learn, showing us the way all schools need to function.
Charles Leadbeater is a financial journalist turned innovation consultant, who has worked with clients such as the British government and Microsoft and whose theories on innovation have influenced some of the world’s largest organizations to rethink their strategies.
Among other things, Leadbeater is famous for coining the term “pro-ams” – passionate amateurs who act like professionals, creating a culture of mass creativity and participation which has the power to reshape companies and governments. Leadbeater was the first to notice that these amateurs were making breakthrough discoveries in numerous fields, creating things like open-source operating system Linux, Wikipedia, or the Jubilee 2000 campaign, which helped persuade Western nations to cancel more than $30 billion in third-world debt.
In his TED talk, Leadbeater recounts his visits to Finland, with its ”amazing school systems”, the Monkey Hill favela in Rio, where initiatives putting donated computers in community places save members of drug gangs from a criminal life. He tells of Madangiri Settlement Colony, a slum outside New Delhi, where young girls who would normally have been married off now instead receive education. Here, a revolutionary social entrepreneur called Sugata Mitra has installed a computer at the entrance to the slum, showing the girls how to learn on their own with the help of computers.
